FDIC 2012 Followup – Braun Ambulances, E-ONE Fire Apparatus, Marque, McCoy Miller and More!
FDIC 2012 was another great event for firefighters and fire industry representatives alike. There was estimated to be over 30,000 attendants at this year's FDIC with over 5,000 firefighters engaging in the many training events and stations provided during this infamous week long educational series in Indianapolis, Indiana. There was a lot of learning as well as a lot of laughs and even some sentimental moments, especially during the Fallen Brothers of 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. If you have a moment, check out our friend's at Penn Care and their blog post/video here on this emotional stair climb event, complete with bagpipes and hundreds of firefighters remembering their fallen brothers from that tragic event in September years ago.
Nassau Fire Apparatus representatives were there to catch up with old friends and clients and to keep up with the latest and greatest in the fire and EMS industry. Of the massive crew that makes up Nassau Fire, in attendance this year at FDIC 2012 was Robert Buglione, Vice President and Operations Manager; Pete Caliendo, Executive Vice President and Sales; and Howie Boynton, Sales Representative.
In support of all the product lines Nassau Fire represents, team members were seen at multiple booths, such as Braun Industries, Marque and McCoy Miller, E-ONE Fire Apparatus, Genesis Rescue, and ASAP Off-Road Emergency Vehicles. Here are a few photos from each booth:

Mobile Medical Units Available to Provide Cost-Effective Firefighter Physical Exams
With the start of 2012, it is time again to review the recommendations and requirements of NFPA to keep all firefighters and EMS workers as safe and healthy as possible for the coming new year. Getting an annual physical exam is no exception to this. Yet, what if all of the firefighters of your department could conveniently get an in-depth physical exam at their own fire department at the same time on the same day? Now with companies like Inter-State Diagnostic, this is very possible.
Covering the state of New York, Inter-State Diagnostic is an advanced “mobile medical unit” that brings the doctor's office directly to your fire department. You simply pick a convenient date and time for your department, and the medical staff comes straight to you! With over 15 years of experience, Inter-State Diagnostics performs extensive physical exams on all firefighters and is acutely aware of the requirements needed to be in compliance with OSHA (Occupational Health and Safety Administration), PESH (Public Education and Safety), and NFPA (National Firefighters Protection Association). All firefighters can be examined on the same day in the comfort of their fire department instead of each individual firefighter setting up their own separate appointments with their personal physician.
This is not only convenient for the firefighters but also for the department itself as all of the records will be kept completely confidential and in one safe place, helping the department stay organized and efficient. Also, after the examinations are completed, Inter-State Diagnostic sends a classification breakdown for each firefighter as well as individual certificates of medical clearance for the firefighters that were cleared to use a respirator pack.
It seems this service is too good to be true, which usually leads many people to wonder about how extensive the physical exams really are that Inter-State Diagnostic performs. However, these exams prove to be very thorough and all-encompassing, including:
- EKG (heart test with computer and physician interpretation included)
- Spirometry (pulmonary function test to analyze lung capacity)
- Audiometry (hearing test)
- Blood work (includes 47 different lab tests)
- Urine analysis (testing for glucose)
- Height, weight and vision testing
- Complete history breakdown and thorough physical exam with a licensed medical professional who goes over all of the above results
- Plus countless other tests and vaccinations for firefighters to utilize at their check-ups!
Inter-State Diagnostic is eager to work with the fire stations of the state of New York and is planning to extend to the tri-state area soon. For more information on this service visit their website at www.interstatediagnostic.com or give them a call at 631-673-6501!
NFPA Releases Important Report on Ambulance Crash Data
The NFPA recently released a report consisting of a collection of ambulance crash data that included all 50 states. The Fire Protection Research Foundation (the research affiliate of the NFPA) conducted the study and released their findings in a report called "Analysis of Ambulance Crash Data".
The whole reason for the collection of this data is NFPA's continuous effort to develop national standards for ambulance and emergency vehicle safety procedures. EMS responders work to save lives every day and so it is important to keep their health and protection in mind by constantly improving emergency vehicle design and maintenance.
In the reports, it was found that each state seemed to have a different method or format for collecting data on these crashes, the contributing factors to the crashes, and the injuries or fatalities that occurred for citizens and emergency responders alike. Recommendations were then made to develop a more comprehensive data collecting system that all states can use to help correlate the data better. Hopefully this uniformed approach can lead to discovering underlining issues with the current standards and/or procedures and ultimately lead to improvements to better safeguard EMS providers and the people they are trying to aid.
We urge you to take a look at the data provided in this crash report. Some of the statistics might alarm you. Take for instance the number of crashes alone - between 1990 and 2009, there were nearly 85,000 crashes reported that involved ambulances. Of those crashes, 29,000 people were injured and 590 died. That is an average of 11 crashes a day in vehicles that are supposed to be the means of safety! This data is very important for us to grasp; more studies need to be performed and more progress needs to be made in the safety aspect for our EMS personnel and their patients.
What do you think about the data provided by the NFPA? Is there anything particular interesting you thought was revealed in the data? Was there something they left out?
