NFPA Releases Important Report on Ambulance Crash Data
The NFPA recently released a report consisting of a collection of ambulance crash data that included all 50 states. The Fire Protection Research Foundation (the research affiliate of the NFPA) conducted the study and released their findings in a report called "Analysis of Ambulance Crash Data".
The whole reason for the collection of this data is NFPA's continuous effort to develop national standards for ambulance and emergency vehicle safety procedures. EMS responders work to save lives every day and so it is important to keep their health and protection in mind by constantly improving emergency vehicle design and maintenance.
In the reports, it was found that each state seemed to have a different method or format for collecting data on these crashes, the contributing factors to the crashes, and the injuries or fatalities that occurred for citizens and emergency responders alike. Recommendations were then made to develop a more comprehensive data collecting system that all states can use to help correlate the data better. Hopefully this uniformed approach can lead to discovering underlining issues with the current standards and/or procedures and ultimately lead to improvements to better safeguard EMS providers and the people they are trying to aid.
We urge you to take a look at the data provided in this crash report. Some of the statistics might alarm you. Take for instance the number of crashes alone - between 1990 and 2009, there were nearly 85,000 crashes reported that involved ambulances. Of those crashes, 29,000 people were injured and 590 died. That is an average of 11 crashes a day in vehicles that are supposed to be the means of safety! This data is very important for us to grasp; more studies need to be performed and more progress needs to be made in the safety aspect for our EMS personnel and their patients.
What do you think about the data provided by the NFPA? Is there anything particular interesting you thought was revealed in the data? Was there something they left out?

Nassau Fire Apparatus Becomes Dealer for ASAP 911 Off-Road Emergency Vehicles
Nassau Fire Apparatus has recently become the exclusive dealer for ASAP 911 off-road emergency vehicles in the areas of Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine, Upstate New York and Long Island.
Nassau Fire is proud to team up with ASAP 911 (Alternative Support Apparatus, LLC) because they are a leading manufacturer of innovative word class off-road specialty vehicles made specifically to help out the EMS and firefighting world. Similar to the John Deere gator vehicle, these emergency vehicles are perfect for all kinds of situations where a normal ambulance, patrol car, or fire truck could simply not go because of size or terrain. They are versatile and come with many optional features to make your off-road vehicle as robust and as rugged as you need for the terrain and areas you will be patrolling.
Nassau Fire Apparatus now offers the three off-road vehicles of the ASAP 911 line which include the MedStat ambulance, WildFire mini fire truck, and the Lifeguard beach and trail patrol vehicle. The MedStat ambulance is basically a mobile ambulance made for off-road purposes. It is a mini ambulance that can handle rough terrain and fit in tight spaces, perfect for patrolling outdoor concerts and sporting events or conducting urban and inner city search and rescue. The Wildfire is a mobile fire truck that can go where larger fire apparatuses just cannot. It is perfect for being used as brush fire trucks or a forest fire vehicle. Lastly, the LifeGuard is perfect as a beach rescue vehicle or patrolling trails, recreational and park areas. Also, because of their ruggedness, any of these vehicles can be used in bad weather and would be perfect in assisting in a snow rescue as they are ideal snow vehicles.
All three of these off-road vehicles use the rugged Polaris Ranger 6x6 chassis, have a 40 HP engine, and can travel at speeds of up to 40 MPH. These rescue vehicles also have an independent suspension and on-demand six wheel drive. No matter which line you choose, you will be getting a rescue ATV that will allow your emergency service providers and private entities the ability to execute in any situation that demands all-terrain performance.
Nassau Fire Apparatus is proud to be a dealer for the ASAP 911 Off-Road Emergency Vehicles. Find out everything you need to know about these rescue ATVs by checking out our website here! Also, as always, feel free to give us a call to discuss your off-road vehicle needs at 877-538-8220!
Twin 2011 Braun Super Chief Ambulances Delivery to North Amityville Fire Company
Nassau Fire Apparatus wants to congratulate the North Amityville Fire Company in Suffolk county, NY on their two brand new ambulances! Peter Caliendo, Executive Vice President and Sales at Nassau Fire Apparatus, delivered two 2011 Braun Type I Super Chief ambulances on 2012 International 4300 chassis on August 31st to the department.
North Amityville Fire Company was established in 1940 and has since had 71 years of service to the Amityville community with 60 active members today. Under the leadership of Chief Tim Lay, Commissioner Jimmy McGruder, and District Manager Paula Adams, the North Amityville Fire Company handles more than 2,000 emergency medical service alarms per year and attended to those calls for the past 10 years with their older Braun Super Chief twins. As a note of interest, Commissioner Jimmy McGruder was on the Board of Fire Commissioners as well as the New Ambulance Committee when they purchased the prior Braun ambulances. A special thanks to Commissioner Jimmy McGruder for his continued dedication and loyalty, serving at the North Amityville Fire Company for the past 44 years.
The reason that North Amityville decided to purchase another set of Braun ambulances to replace their aging team is a reason we hear very often when dealing with clients who have used and experienced the Braun brand day to day. They found outstanding value and service with the current Braun units they had and so decided to stick with what was working and purchase another 2 Braun ambulances to replace their older ones. They also had a great experience working with Nassau Fire Apparatus as well.
